Air India retires B747-400

According to the Economic Times of India, Air India has retired its final four B747-400s and the Jumbos have been deregistered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The airline, now in the private hands of Tata Sons, is busy with making the company and its fleet more efficient and the B747s therefore aren't fitting in anymore.

The last B747-400 flight was operated by Air India on 10 March 2021 by VT-EVA (28094) and since then it has been parked together with VT-ESO (27165), VT-ESP (27214) and VT-EVB (28095) at Mumbai. All four remain there and it's unclear what the future will hold for them.

The retirement marks the end of a long relationship Air India had with the Boeing 747, which started with the delivery of its first B747-200 in March 1971. In total, the airline operated fourteen B747-200s, three B747-300s and eleven B747-400s.
