WestJet to discontinue Swoop

WestJet has announced it will discontinue its low-cost subsidiary Swoop and merge it into its mainline operations. Swoop's final flight will take place on 28 October 2023 after which the aircraft, over time, will be rebranded into WestJet-livery.

The decision to merge Swoop into WestJet was made after the airline reached an agreement with its pilots in which the pay was leveled between the two airlines. As a result, the cost-base for Swoop is similar as that of WestJet, meaning operating two separate brands would cost more.

Swoop was launched in 2017, and currently operates a fleet of sixteen aircraft consisting of ten B737-800s and six B737-8s. The LCC has its bases at Edmonton and Toronto-Pearson.
