AMS - UK Market Developments 2010

Post by XYZ »

In January of each year, I post a review of the AMS-UK-AMS market developments over the past 12 months. As the United Kingdom is Schiphol most important market, it is interesting to see what is happening to individual routes.

Herewith an overview of the AMS <-> UK passenger market in the year 2010.

The year 2010 has been another difficult year for Schiphol's most important market. The UK is still suffering lower demand for air travel due the economic crisis, but on top of that the Icelandic volcano eruption resulted in a long closure of all flights between the UK-AMS. In addition snow problems closed several UK airports for days in early and late 2010.

But even under these difficult conditions three AMS routes managed to set a new annual passenger record:

1. Liverpool = 346.008 plus 19,7% - new both EZY & KLC 4x/daily each
2. Stansted = 278.781 plus 7,7% - EZY increased frequency
3. London City 366,306 = plus 5,9% - CityJet & BA

The biggest losses were reported by:

1. London Heathrow 1.332.798 = minus 11,7% - departure BMI
2. Cardiff 125.118 = minus 7,5% - KLC down to 3x/daily
3. Manchester 436.927 = minus 7,1% - big losses early in year due to LPL, growth with new EZY flights since November

Total Market - AMS-UK-AMS:
- 2010 = 6.484.800 -0.9%
- 2009 = 6.544.135 -9,6%
- 2008 = 7.232.400 -7,3%
- 2007 = 7.801.718 + 1%
