Oceana 16-05-11

Post by dinger »

Spent an incredible day at NAS Oceana on Monday. The morning was spent on the outside shooting the approach to 23R and the afternoon was spent on a ramp tour from 1300 till 1700. I think I came away with over 500 images that will take me a fair bit of time to edit. Here are 3 for now from the morning arrivals.

Hi Dinger,

Nice shots ! Which of these three were taken from the outside of the base ? And did you encounter any problems taking photos from the outside ?

I'm asking because I'm considering to visit Oceana from the outside myself soon.

Cheers,
Iwan

Hi Iwan,

I guess, all three photos were taken outside the base. No real problems with the authorities, besides some ID-checking.
Spotting at NAS Oceana shouldn't be a real problem. Most well known spots are the S Ocean Blvd (approach rwy 23) and Potters Rd (approach rwy 15).
See also the Scramble guide!!

Niels

All 3 shots were taken from outside. No hassle from the authorities as long as you park out of the way and the light is good from Oceana Blvd until around 1400.

Thanks for the info.

I take it that photo 3 was a straight in landing, while photos 1 + 2 were doing circuits and turning short finals ? And did you set ourself up at the treeline / sideroad, where you can just see the aircraft line up / touch down ?

Cheers,
Iwan

Most of the jets perform a fighter break and turn in to land over your shoulder. They are just about lined up when they get in front of you hence the partial topsides. Some jets do make a straight in approach though so beware.
There is a turn off to a municipal site with ample space to park up as long as you park tight ot the fence to allow access for the workers. From here you can see the jets taxi out for departure but they are distant and very heat hazed.
