NATO helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

Post by John 312 »

A NATO helicopter has crashed in east Afghanistan during an anti-Taliban operation, resulting in some foreign troop casualties, an Afghan official has said.

The helicopter came down late on Friday in the eastern province of Wardak, southwest of the capital Kabul, Shahidullah Shahid, the provincial spokesman, said.
"The joint forces [foreign and Afghan] conducted an operation against the Taliban in Sayd Abad district last night," he said.
"Eight insurgents were killed. A coalition helicopter that was firing on insurgents at the time crashed.
"We're not sure if this happened due to insurgent fire or not but there were some casualties of foreign troops due to the crash."
Shahid said coalition and Afghan officials were investigating the crash site on Saturday.
A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan said they were currently assessing what had happened.
"We are aware of an incident involving a helicopter in eastern Afghanistan," the spokesman said, adding that he could not give any further details at this stage.
Taliban claims responsibility
In a written statement, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the group claimed responsibility for the crash.
He said NATO had attacked a house in Sayd Abad where Taliban fighters were gathering on Friday.
The Taliban then fired on NATO and downed the helicopter, killing the crew, Mujahid said.
Aircraft crashes are relatively frequent in Afghanistan, where insecurity and difficult terrain make air travel essential for coalition forces transporting troops and equipment.
There have been at least 17 coalition and Afghan aircraft crashes in Afghanistan this year.
Friday's crash comes as the Afghan army and police ready themselves to take full charge of the country's security as NATO starts withdrawing its forces this year.

Awaiting more info on crash. My Army Aviation brothers over there are involved in some of that stuff. Hoping none of them were in that crash. God rest the souls of those who were.

this is the largest single event loss of US troop life in the Afghan war so far, and if I am not mistaken, also the deadliest DAY in the Afghan war as well. That would make it the deadliest single day for US troops since WWII if that is the case.

www.armyaircrews.com identify this crash as a CH-47 with the loss of 5 crew,25 US Navy Seals and 7 Afghal Special Forces killed.

I recall over 100 US troops killed in a collosion between a C-141 and a USMC F-4 in Vietnam,so not the largest loss of US personnel in 1 day since WWII.

Well 175 is a D-model, which is cinsistent with reports that it was a "standard" Chinook on the mission, not a SOAR MH-47G as initially believed, but inconsistent with reports that it was a Chinook with the latest avionics, which would be Fox models. Course, those reports are coming from CNN so.....

ok just looked it up and apparently there is no CH-47D 89-00175.....

Ok didn't think to check with only 1 0 instead of 2.

Initial reports in Army Times shows 1 Nebraska and 1 Kansas NG soldier were 2 of the Army crew on the aircraft. I do know that Kansas NG did have CH-47Ds in country in that area as of a few months ago, but their crews and regular army crews that flew CH-47Fs often crewed in the different models.

barely footage of the wreckage. must be what was left behind after the actual wreckage was hauled out of there. the "Made In Germany" weapon that the media beefed up into some crazy story was a Heckler and Koch (H&K) built version of the M-4, which the Seals and other Special operators use regularly. H&Ks are made in Germany, unlike their Colt, Springfield, etc. counterparts that the regular armed forces M-16/M-4s. That is all.
