100th anniversary Russian Air Force

10 - 12 August 2012

Static:
The year 2012 marks the 100th anniversary for the Russian Air Force. This event was celebrated in the whole of Russia, with the main event being held at Zhukovsky near Moscow.
As Russia is trying to regain its important role in the world again, the anniversary was a nice opportunity to show the world it’s still powerful air force. Especially all the new
equipment was displayed in large numbers.

From 10 to 12 August 2012 an airshow was organised at Zhukovsky, all in a very Russian style. Although details of the show were published rather late from our ‘western’
perspective, and to obtain tickets for the airshow in time looked hard in the beginning, most people managed to arrange everything in time. Parking for the general public
was at Bykovo airport. Everybody was transported to the airshow by one of the enormous amount of busses.

The first day of the airshow was on Friday. For al long time it was not clear if this was only the general rehearsal, or a real showdate. So a lot of people find a place for photography on
the south side of the airfield. This day there was quite some sun and was good for photos. The second day (Saturday) was reserved for President Putin and VIP’s. On this day the
flying program was stopped/cancelled for two hours because of some bad weather and thunderstorms. Again, south of the airfield was very crowded by western and russian
spectators. So mot people did visit the airshow on Sunday. The static display at Zhukovsky was not very large, but a lot of new aircraft and helicopter types (of which a lot in the
new one-tone grey colour) were presented to the general public. To bad the flying aircraft are flying against the sun for photography, for good pictures you need to be on the
south side outside the airbase. Most impressive was the large airshow that contained a lot of formations of active aircraft and helicopters, but also warbirds, solo demonstrations,
tactical flying displays and demo teams. We now present you an overview of this very nice event:
Zhukovsky 10 - 12 August 2012
Additional to the units we also list the home base of the aircraft when known. For the flying aircraft we list between brackets the
base they flew from. Underlined info was not checked at this airshow.

The Rossiya aircraft were at Zhukovsky for President Putin’s visit to the airshow on 11 August.

So far for this great airshow at Zhukovsky for the 100 anniversary of the Rusian air force. Little known at that time were a lot of
small local open days at various airbases that same weekend. The open days exited of some based and local area aircraft. Flying
was very limited if there was any. For example at Ryazan, Tver, Vladimir, Monchegorsk, Cheyabinsk, Ekaterinburg, Akthubinsk,
Arsenyev, Khabarovsk, Orenburg and possibly more. In August also two ‘official’ open days were held at Voronezh and Pushkin.
At these shows the main types of the russian air force were displayed, with some additional displays of the Russian Knights,
Strizhi and the Lipetsk Su-27s next to some local types. Just to give you some impression, we have conducted a show report from
the many pictures on the internet.

including addition september 2012
