On 11 January 2022, a Chung-Hua Min Guo Kong Jun (RoCAF, Republic of China Air Force) F-16A crashed around 15:30 hrs LT at the Water Creek Range, some 14,5 miles west from Chiayi air base.
The fighter, an upgraded F-16A with serial 6650 (c/n TA-50), was operated by the 21st Tactical Fighter Group and the pilot is still missing. As a result of this crash, Taiwan suspended all flights with the F-16.
In November 2021, the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing at Chiayi air base celebrated the milestone of being the first unit in the world reaching Full Operational Capability (FOC) on the upgraded F-16A and F-16B Block 72V variant, also reported as the F-16V.
