Afghanistan Kabul airport 640Remains of Afghan Air Force

In mid-2021, the Taliban led a major offensive in Afghanistan during the withdrawal of US troops from the country, which gave them control of over half of Afghanistan's 421 districts as of 23 July 2021.

By mid-August 2021, they controlled every major city in Afghanistan; following the near seizure of the capital Kabul, the Taliban occupied the Presidential Palace after the incumbent President Ashraf Ghani fled Afghanistan to the United Arab Emirates.

With the withdrawal of US and Coalition Forces from Kabul International Airport, a large number of Afghan Air Force aircraft and helicopters were disabled by the US military. On 31 August 2021, after the last US military aircraft left Afghanistan, a great number of photos and videos could be found on Social Media of aircraft left behind in Afghanistan, most of the videos were made at Kabul airport. One of the latest videos was posted on 10 September 2021.

A small number of helicopters has been reported as active again. According to the latest information, the new rulers have renamed the Afghan Air Force to Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Air Force.

A still unknown number of aircraft and helicopters has fled to neighbouring countries as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Scramble Magazine created an overview of all aircraft confirmed from the various social media sites.
