The future of the Reno Air Races

For a period of 59 years the US National Championship Air Races (NCAR) were held in Reno (NV). The NCAR is the only event in the world to feature seven classes of exciting air racing action in one incredible venue. Six closed-course pylon contests and the immensely popular and entertaining STOL Drag combine to create a unique and world famous aviation event.

These races were traditionally organized in September of every year by the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) at Reno-Stead Airport.  Earlier this year RARA announced that 2023 was to be the final season for Air Racing in Reno and a new location was sought.

In a press release RARA revealed that it was reluctant to take this decision: the local airport association had concerns around challenging economic conditions, rapid area development, public safety and the impact on the Reno-Stead Airport and its surrounding areas.

Since then six locations have produced a bid book in a competition to house the NCAR in the future.

These locations are: Buckeye (AZ), Casper (WY), Pueblo (CO, Roswell (NM), Thermal (CA) and Wendover (UT). In the choice of a new location numerous factors are to be  considered, but a few of the critical requirements for the event include considerable open land available for the racecourses, suitable runways, ramp, and hangar space, administrative and security facilities, as well as proximity to hotels, commercial airports, and restaurants.

A final decision is expected to be announced early next year as the organization prepares for a final air show in Reno in 2024 before moving to the new location in 2025.

The 2023 edition of Reno was meant to be a celebration of 59 years of Reno Air Races but was overshadowed by a tragic accident. After the end of their race, two T-6s, ‘Baron’s Revenge’ and ‘Six Cat’ collided while coming in to land. Both pilots died in this collision.
