Mobile skin for Message Board installed

All,

Today we installed a new lightweight "skin" for this Message Board, specifically aimed at mobile users (mobile phones, PDA's etc).

When you visit the Message Board with such a device, the software will detect (hopefully) you are browsing with, and will automatically present this new skin;

With this new functionality, we think we have created a greater user friendly environment when you want to check the Message Board, and of course post your logs!, while you are on the road or along the fence of an airfield.

As said, this skin -or layout- is specifically aimed at mobile users with smaller screens and having a not always very fast, and sometimes very expensive. internet connection.
Therefore we tried to make the message board fit such a small screen without the need to scroll to the left or right (removing the need to scroll up and down will be an utopia), but also as lightweight as possible - an average page is only about half the size of the similar page using the normal skin, not including any graphics (more on those below).

Some details on this mobile skin;
  • A new layout, without the use of 'tables', fixed widths and so on, so it more easily fits and sizes on smaller screens.
  • All photos included in the posts are replaced by a link to the image. This greatly reduces the download time on slow connections, but keeps the possibility to check the image if you want to.
  • All smiley images are removed, with only the 'text variant' shown.
  • Signatures are not shown by default; partly because the space those occupies on a screen (less scrolling), partly because this eliminates all those banners used in signatures.
  • Most functionality remains, but some items will not be available here, including the possibility to register. And some links which used to be in the top left corner will not be shown, and probably some others which I forgot.
  • The direct link to the RSS feed is not there (RSS will still work, but you have to enter the link manually). This may return in the future though.
  • Some other functions, including the search option, the "active topics" etc, are only available when you are logged in.
  • When you post a new message, it will automatically include a "Post made via Mobile Device"
One important note: we consider this new skin/functionality as still being in the Beta stage, so you are likely to encounter issues which we did not detect our selves. So if you find something which does not work as you expected, or when you still get the 'normal' layout while using a mobile device, and even when you see something where the layout is "ugly", please let us know (send a PM to Hans).

Although I never had problems with the normal skin on my mobile I really like this feature! Its very fast and I will test it in the upcoming days. Posted from my N97

tested on teh Nokia N97 and it works perfect (both pictures and text only messages)

Hi Hans,

It indeed looks good on the i phone, but what i do miss is the "view active posts" button. Which in my opinion is an important way of checking al the latest posts. Do i overlook it somewhere or is there another quick way of looking to those new postings.

Works perfect on my E71! I never had problems with the 'normal' board on my mobile phone, but this is much faster and easier!! Great job Scramble!! (mag ook wel eens gezegd worden)

Just one thing to improve: in the top of my browser, above the board there is a big white area with nothing in it, so i have to scroll down to see the board...
