Axalp 10/11 October

Post by Eagledriver 32 »

Were can I find some info of the Air Power Demo in Axalp next October?
We´ve planned to go there but there is (yet) not too much info.

What are the exact dates of the demo. I only can find that it takes from 8 till 11 october with the 12th as a reserve day.

How long does it take to reach the 3 spots on the mountain. How far is it by foot to go up?

thanks a lot! Ewald

Wednesday and Thursday are the demo days, so 10 and 11 October 2007.

About your second question: long or a bit less long, depending on the weather, the status of your physical and mental health, the weight and quality of your equipment, etc... The first spot needs about 30-45 minutes less time than the last spot.

You probably want to know which spot is best...? Well, they are all nice and each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages...

If you're in normal physical condition it should be no problem to get up there. For people with circulation or heart problems it might be helpful to visit a doctor before.

I've been in Axalp for two times and I really suggest to find an accommodation in the village Axalp itself.

But you have to be quick. Reserve a room as soon as possible. More infos about hotels etc. are available at http://www.axalp.ch" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The advantage of being in Axalp already is saving time in the morning. No driving, no time wasted while looking for a parking space etc.!

From Axalp it will take you round about 1-2 hours to walk up to the viewing area. But there is also a lift running from Axalp with which you can save some of the distance. Although it isn't the distance. Axalp is situated ca. 1500m above main sea level, the viewing area is in ca. 2300m. :D

You can go up there the whole week. The firing practice normally starts around 0900 CET so it is a good idea to start your walk around 0600 as the ways up there will be closed during the firing practices. Firing might take place between 0900-1130 and 1400-1630. On Monday and Tuesday of that week you might also see training flights for the official demo e.g. Hornet Display, Patrouille Suisse etc.!
The official Axalp Demo takes place on Wednesday and Thursday starting at 1400 each day. In the morning hours normal shooting will take place.
If on one of these days the show has to be cancelled due to weather the Friday will see a demo. The F-5 and F-18 normally operate from Meiringen, the PS from Emmen.

As the show takes place in October it might be winter already so bring appropriate clothing with you. The weather can change very quickly up there. Always have some fresh clothes in your bagpack. When you arrive up there you should change your sweated shirt and trouser etc.! It can be very cold and windy up there.
When the sun comes out later on it is getting better.
Apropos weather. Be warned. You might be up there and the sun is shining but you don't see a jet at all because the jets at Meiringen can't take off due to fog. It can also be the other way round. Quite good conditions but the range is in the clouds or fog and once again no activities up there.
The worst scenario: The weather is a total mess up the whole week and you might see no jets up there at all.

But no risk no fun. So far it was always worth it.

I was at Axalp a few years ago. When we started to walk up the mountain in the early morning (it was still dark) the weather was good. When we arrived at the top the weather changed to a heavy snowstorm :( . They told us that all flights where cancelled for that day. After that we walked back. This was very dangerous because the sight was maximim 1 meter. Because of the very hard wind blowing snow in our eyes finding the way back down the mountain was a real survival. Because we coudn't see what was below the snow (about 30 - 50 centimeters !) we often fell over rocks.

When we arrived down the mountain my friend had lost his telephone and injured his hand (just some cut's because of the falling).

:!: So climbing the Axalp mountain is not allways easy and sometimes dangerous ! :!:

Take a flash-light with you when you start walking in the early (dark) morning. Also take some ski-glasses for when a snowstorm will show up

There is a "hut" of the Swiss Air Force where you can sit during bad weather. I don't know how much people can stay in this little building and when it is opened.

We stayed at a hotel in the village of Axalp. Don't know the price but we had a sort of "mountian-climbers-room". This was one room with about 8 or 10 beds. This was not very expensive but you don't have any privacy and you sleep in the same room with complete strangers.

You can drive up the mountain by car. There is a small parking place (for just a few cars, so you have to be very early and yoy need a sort of "sticker" on your car to use this road). From this location you have to walk. Don't know exactly for how long, but I guess it was minimal 1 hour.

I did't use the lift.

There are two new highlights this year.

- Pc-21 Display
- Air-to Air Shooting with F-5/F-18

The premise for the second highlight is, that nobody is at military area. Please stand to the rules.

I heard a rumour that the Belgian air force will participate also with some F-16's. Can anybody confirm this or is it just a rumour?

Thanks
