I was not at ramstein this year, but a friend of mine witnessed the accident. It took me about 30 years to attend an airshow with military aircraft performing formation aerobatics.

I think it's inappropriate to use the wrecks of the 3 MB-339PAN for a monument. It has nothing to do with the skills of the pilots. By the way: the accident was caused by the solo-flyer #10 who sliced the # 1 and #2 aircraft. Coming is much to low to perform the arrow through the heart.

As far as i know the wrecks of the MB-339PAN have been removed from Cerbaiola.

By the way ; the wrecked UH-60A was 82-23697 and the pilot died later in the USA. The crew was on stand-by duty, but the helicopter was damaged by one of the MB-339PAN's

And it's not sure if this was caused by pilot error or a sudden mechanical failure of the #10 jet. There is even a (farfetched) conspiracy theory saying that the jet was sabotaged in order to kill the Frecce pilots, because they knew too much about NATO's role in the Itavia DC9 crash.

I was always told that the number 10 had to pull up a bit because of a small "bump" in the terrain, causing him to smash into #1 and #2. But I don't know if that's true.

PS at the Air Show on Kleine Brogel also a small Finish trainer crashed...

Going for the numbers (then) I visited all three airshows that day. So I was lucky to have left Ramstein before the desaster and to arrive at KB well after the L90 crash.

After 25 years its still not sure what causes the crash that day, but a complot to kill the airman is new to me.
And why sabotage the aircraft? they must know that it will lead to to collateral damage on the ground killing innocent civilians.

I think what's written most, that de solo made an mistake.
B.T.W. it was the 13th time that we visit this airshow, all the other times we were standing in front of the tower. nice in the centre of it.
Right near or at the spot where the plane hit the public....
Only in 88 we decided to take a place at the 09 enter of the runway for a better photo shoot.....
How a decision can end your life or not........

A year later at chievre it was great to see the Frecci's back on display for the first time, and the moral support they received from the military crews and civilians.

I was there as well and afterward spend a lot of time trying to understand what had happened. The complot theorie is not new and a lot can be found on that. http://www.wings900.com/vb/1-1-civil-av ... 980-a.html

If you dig in to the KAL007 incident, the 747 shoot down over Russia about the same time as Ramstein, then you find that human lives are less important in the greater picture.

However, with the Frecce crash, to me a tragic accident is still the most likely cause, I even have red something about a sudden vertical wind: downdraft or microburst which is IMHO the most likely cause for the solo to endup lower than he anticipated.
