Nyutabaru Air Show

Post by Niall Grant »

Hi,

Looking for some advice on the airshow in December.

1) Looking at the airfield layout it would appear that photography of flying display is into the sun. Is it best to stay off base for the show (at spots 2-4)?

2) Is it possible/worthwhile to go on base and photograph static and then leave to go to spots 2-4?

3) Finally, the show is on a Sunday do visiting aircraft arrive on the Friday/Saturday for the show and is there the possibility of
flying/practice on the Saturday?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Niall

1. Yes
2. Yes, but can be tricky (typically the gates open say 07:30, display starts 09:30 and finished by noon, and perhaps only the Blue Impulse display during the afternoon). All over by 3pm usually, with the visitors departures starting immediately the show ends.
3. Saturday could be a cut down display - open for families/invited guests only. Visitor arrivals are usually the Friday afternoon.

The road situation is something to be aware of during the show weekend. Parking is all off base at various remote locations served by buses. The roads around the airbase are closed on the Sunday and the roads immediately south-side to the fields are typically already closed on the Saturday. Not uncommon for people to park up south-side on the Saturday evening and sleep in their cars.

Hi Niall,

I was there in 2008, my advice is to be at spot 1, 2 or 3 in the very early morning (the shuttlebusses from the parking entered the airfield through the gate at spot 3, I got off the bus over there). Flying started in 2008 around 8:00 (takeoffs for the opening flyby). After the flying display take a 30-40 minutes walk around the airfield to the static display area. At the end of the day most visiting aircraft will leave, giving you a chance of some 'clean' shots.

regards,

Pieter

Thanks all for the information, and Paul for the link about the carparks.
