Nikon D-80

[Alpha Kilo One]

I was being asked whether or not is a good choice to now buy a D-80.
I know that it has a rather good price right now.
A friend of mine is thinking of buying one.
He saw it at Correct for less than Euro 1000.-- including 18-200 VR.
As I am not a Nikonian, who can help?

- Good lens? Better alternatives?
- Maybe another place to buy one?
- Better wait and buy a D-90?
What does a D-90 anyhow offer more in terms of all-day use (he is also spotting military planes).
Don't mention the videomodus, because I think that's nonsense.

I have both the D80 and 18-200VR and they are both nice products.

The D80 has a higher pixel sharpness than the D90 so if you don't need the video modus or the bigger LCD, just go for the D80.

The 18-200VR is a nice sharp lens but as every superzoom it loooses quality at 200mm and is pronounced barrel shaped at 18mm. Also at wide open aperture you tend to get some dark corners as it is a DX lens. Full-frame lenses don't have this problem.

Basically, the D80 is a watered down D200, the D90 has been derived from a D300 in a similar way. See the CCD vs CMOS chips as well as the pixel count.
