Do not delete your unsharp / motion blurred pictures!

Post by Erik_7Xi »

You have to see this - it's a presentation on a new Photoshop feature that allows you to unblur motion blurred photo's!

http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/10/photoshop ... g-for-air/

NOTE: For best effect, watch the youtube video in the article at 720p.

The software looks at all the pixels in the photo to determine how the image is blurred - what direction was your camera moving in which caused the motion blur to appear in the first place.

It maps out along which trajectory the image was blurred, e.g. did the lens move from left to right, or in a curve etc. Once it knows this, all the pixels in the image "back track" along that path and you end up with a pretty sharp picture.

This is pretty amazing stuff as especially when shooting with low shutter speeds ( in particular with helicopters), you may end up with photo's that are almost sharp, but just not really 'tack sharp' - putting it beyond the salvation of the "Unsharp Mask". (In my opinion, USM can only be used to provide some more oopf! to a photo, it can't rescue an unsharp image).

This new feature will allow you to rescue that image. I have no idea yet how good this is going to be and how it will work for our particular kind of photography but it is extremely interesting.

Hi Erik,

I noticed the sneak preview too, and it seems to be a fantastic invention for low shutterspeed action defects. Now it will be a matter of time before it will be included in Photoshop CS6, CS7 or even beyond. Let's just ope we don't have to wait too long before we can rescue some amazing images with it.

Cheers,
Iwan

I hope it won't be too long before it's out - the sneak preview looked a lot more polished and finished than the other sneak previews years ago of functionality that went into CS5.

It will be an amazing tool to rescue some shots!

So that is the end to all craftmanship. Even unsharp photo's can be rescued.................. We already could correct the exposure and colours and now this.

I want to go back to slides!!! (Just kidding!)

I am really looking forward to this tool as well.

Best,
Anno

IMHO the charm of photography is totally gone with this feature.
*We can now sell our big lenses and buy a 50-500 (plus a 2.0 extender) instead.
*Cameras can now be equipped with ISO 25 or even lower, because shutter speeds ain't important anymore.
*VR/IS is worthless.

It might soon be time to look out for another hobby...

I am feeling the same, but on the other hand I realize people also had this feeling when autofocus, image stabilization, digital camera's etc were introduced..

I agree DJ, but the point is that photography will now (almost) reach perfection, something that hasn't been reached with AF, IS or whatsoever. And although I'm a bit of a perfectionist myself too, I don't think it's fun if everything (i.e. every photo) is perfect.

Well, it's my goal to make crisp pictures to start off with, but having said that, what's wrong with a picture that can be enhanced, after all, most of us run our pictures through Photoshop or similar programs anyway to sharpen or process them, not to mention the HDR options...
Why is it we allow numerous updates and enhancements on our cars, televisions, smartphones before they are perfect, but not on our pictures.
No one cares if you made 2 crisp pictures, or 1000 as we will most likely only see the crisp ones so what's the big deal, what is there to prove?

And face it, taking pictures af fast moving aircraft, or catching the dynamics of a rotating propellor or rotor isn't the easiest thing to do and haven't we all faced one or more occasions where the picture composition was exactly what we wanted, not to say perfect, but the picture turned out blurred? What's wrong with creating your own perfect picture using such an incredible tool?

IMHO if you don't enhance your pictures, that's great, if you do, that's also great, if you don't like the possibility of digitally enhacing pictures and are afraid you might get tempted to do it yourself, roll back to analogue photography.

We all live our hobby in our won way, what you think is the best picture, I might consider total ==censored==, and visa versa, but I personally would very much welcome this feature

I simply doubt that it's possible to make fool-proof cameras with a 100% perfect-piccie score...

And even if the industry should achieve that, more than ever will "the eye" make the difference!

(maybe Martijn can make a fortune by selling a "NustyR-app"..

Gent's,

I saw the sneak peak as well and I have to say "Can't wait"! Not because it will finally rescue all my =censored= up images but because I want to see this technology with my own eyes!

To all people who say things like: "Charm has gone" and it goes "Down the drain" or "The end of craftsmanship" I would like to say "True photography is made with your mind" camera and software are just the operational tools.

Ps, Anno I still have a Kodachrome 25 in the fridge, it's fore sale! ;-)

Grtz,

Marcel

Photography is about creating, whereas cars, televisions and smartphones are not.... 'Updating' creativity could mean that you take out the creative aspect and replace it with something that resembles exact science; just punch in the right numbers and there's your result. Or in other words; kids play.

Btw, instead of 'run our pictures through Photoshop' I read 'ruin our pictures through Photoshop'. Not a big deal, as in a lot of cases, it's the same thing.

It would be nice if Adobe also provided a tool to recover all the blurry pictures that I've deleted so far... :@(:
