Bambi bucket action - GLV-5

Post by Iwan Bogels »

Today I had the day off from work and I decided to go chopper chasing in GLV-5. I had no information about any upcoming activities, so it was a wild guess to go there.

But just before lunch Sven van Roij and Nick Wille informed me that a Dutch television program was coming to our area to shoot their topic about wildfire suppression. This should bring at least one helicopter to the scene. One hour later a new grey CH-47F Chinook turned up without a bambi bucket, followed by a green AS-532 Cougar. Both aircraft landed about a mile away, well out of view, to unload and hook up their buckets. Marcel Bos and me decided to head for the little lake in order to catch the helicopters dipping for water, and we got lucky. Both helicopters did 10+ drops each, allowing us to find a good spot and shoot from various angles.

This shot is my favorite of the day. Fall colors, a rainbow and the two helicopters all in one frame.

Cheers,
Iwan
