Japan 2015 part 1: Hyakuri Air Festival (25 October 2015)

Post by Lifeliner 3 »

End of October, I visited Japan for the third time in 5 years. Main goal was to see the Phantoms at Hyakuri (and Nyuta). Last year's trip, we had a non-flying day at Hyakuri, so we were looking for revenge!
Thankfully, we (me and two friends I met during last year's trip with 4Aviation) were lucky. Weather was excellent, as well as the flying activity at the show!
The Air festival also provided some nice opportunities to witness and photograph start ups etc. A first impression of the Air Festa:

Image

1. A small static display included the blue RF-4E!

Image

2. 501 Hikotai RF-4E, ready to taxi.

Image

3. Chocks away!

Image

4. The SAR detachment performed a rescue display with an UH-60 and a U125.

Image

5. The Phantoms performed a series of fast fly-bys.

Image

6. Afterburner!

I'd say: Mission accomplished! :respect:

After this first day of the trip, we indeed had the feeling that we got what we came for! Later during that week, we would come back to Hyakuri. I've changed the title and removed my remark about flight activity, as that refers to the later days of the trip. Flight activity during the Air Festa was excellent! (although getting sharp shots of fast flying Phantoms with my brand-new 7D mkII was quite a challenge. Thankfully I also brought my trusted 1D III and 40D 8) )

Image

7. The best I could get of the blue RF-4E on this day!

Image

8. There was one RF-4EJ on the static platform as well. And yes, on the left you can see one of the towers, and the nearby stone monument.

Image

9. Hot scramble! (I did not get a shot of "Miss Tokyo", who pressed The Red Button, with which the alarm was activated. All part of the display!)

Image

10. No comment!

Image

11. One of the two RF-4Es of 501 Hikotai, taking off for its 'display' (not much more than some hi-speed fly-bys)

Image

12. 301 Hikotai F-4EJ returning after the (simulated) QRA scramble.

Image

13. You don't need many visiting aircraft to have a good show. There were about ten or so, including this Orion from 203 Kyoiku Kokutai (Shimofusa).
It was the best departure fly-by that afternoon!

Well... OK, just a few more then

14. Ofcourse, the 305 Hikotai Eagles were present as well. Two were on the flight line in front of the audience. If I remember correctly, they flew twice that day.
