Southern Airways Express C208 highway landing - Dulles IAD

Post by VH3D »

Hi Guys,

Happen to be in the area shortly after this Cessna 208B landed on local street. Looks like it departed from runway 30 and made a left turn to land on a busy street. Eventually it hit the guardrail. Do any of you have idea what's on the pilot's windshield? Did they put something out there to cover a hole from the falling snow?

Whoa, I don't think we ever had user photos from a mishap scene on the board this soon after the event, many thanks for sharing.

The pilot(s) did a great job getting the plane down that well on the Parkway, and kudos to motorists too for apparently evading the aircraft. It must have been a very 'interesting' 30 seconds there just after taking off from IAD. ADSB-X has the track here.

I don't know what's on the windscreen, could even be some kind of clipboard and we'll have to guess for the reason.
Can we use your photos if the mishap makes it into our Dust & Brush section?

Cheers,
Erik

Thanks VH3D for the pictures, and they will be used (after permission) in the Dustpan & Brush section! :D

Regarding your question on what is on the windscreen, this is a socalled "hot plate" over part of the windshield which maintains a small area of ice-free viewing. Most Caravans are not approved for flight in icing conditions and do not have any de/anti-icing equipment, but some can be ordered with de/anti-icing systems.

Hope this answers your question?

Hi Guys,

Yes you can use my shots in the Dust & Brush section. I've got the shots fast as it happen on my doorsteps :)

As for the plate, that's very interesting. I've never seen anything like that on C208 or any plane for that matter.
We have 15 or so Southern flights a day and this is the first time I see it.
Thanks for the answer!
