Night spinning of the radial engines....

Post by Iwan Bogels »

Hi everybody,

Aviodrome in Lelystad (NL) hosted their annual "Draaiavond" (spin-up evening) last night. Official "Friends of Aviodrome" were invited to witness the night time engine start up of their US-2N Tracker, PBY-5A Catalina and L-749A Constellation. All aircraft were well lit in the dark by studio lights.

About 300 enthusiasts were present this time with camera's ranging from telephone cameras up to professional photo gear. After an indoor briefing the show outside included a 10 - 20 minute spin of each aircraft's engines. The S-2 also showed the folding of the wings, while the L-749 did a short display of reverse thrust.

Needless to say that all three aircraft started up with a lot of smoke and the beautiful sound of radial engines. Too bad the number 3 engine of the Connie didn't manage to start up, but even with three radials it was still a lovely sound.

Here are the results of my "koffiemolennacht".....

Cheers,
Iwan

Probably off-topic, but how do you make such photo's ?

Do you use a tripod ?

Fantastic shots! Was there... but my camera failed (AF malfunctioning :? ) Anyway, I would not have matched this quality without a tripod... Great evening by the way, very well organised and a great 'orchestra'
