ETAR 02-02-2009

Post by maurits »

Hi all,

Last Monday we took the journey to Ramstein which housed some 16 C-17s, 5 C-5s, 2 KC-10s, 1 KC-135R, 5 C-130Hs and some 37thAS C-130Es when we arrived. To give you an impression here some shots we made on the westside. It was very cold and cloudy but some short sunny moments we got the change to take some acceptable shots of ramp 5, some outbound and inbound traffic.
No problems with the security although around 16.00hrs a white USAFE patrol car came to our direction. A friendly German security guy asked us how long we were staying there because the Yanks were a bit nerveus about us.... it was better to stay closer to the road instead of directly to the base-fence.... We told him not took any infrastructure-shots, only landing and promise to leave afterwards..... Okay here the results, starting with C-17A 183rd AS MS ANG 03-3114

Hi Rene,

No problems only the German security guy as I told above. But it is better to hide yourself a bit, we didn't that afternoon so that means a lot of cars inside can see you at the fence.
That people don't trust what they see (Three guys with hats, bino's and cameras..). Informing the tower and asking then the security to take a look. That's what the German security guy explained. We parked our car at the Autohof and walked to the westernside-approach. I think Polizei will only come if you stay their with your car.
So.. be aware!

Normally the Polizei will come to you even if your car is at the Autohof.
Luckily for you guys they didn't come and wanted to see the pics, otherwise you could have big problems. We once had problems at Spangdahlem. They wanted to see every picture which was on the card, but they were not to smart because I didn't got problems even when I had pics from a USAF C-17 at Volkel. They said it's ok because no American aircraft is on your card! :P :P :P

haha that sounds funny here this "germanglish" :D

Very nice pictures!! Could you tell me where you stand there? I planned a visit to Ramstein this year but its hard to find good positions.

A friend lives 5 kilometres away and the Polizei came everytime when he was at the Base. But he never had problems, he talked a lot with the Police and an officer also wanted to see some of his pictures :D ... so anybody who want to visit Ramstein : We have a friendly Police here!!! ;)

Hi,

I can confirm but be aware that base-security could sent German Polizei to check you and yes checking your camera is one of the actions. I have always a spare-card with no aircraft pics quickly change is an option if you see them come...
But... We were twice luckily, at Ramstein by driving our car on the road passing the westernside apporach. A green German police van was on my back, we just stopped 5 minutes to read off a C-5... Hmmmm now we have a problem I think...

But, also two laughing Polizei-manner told us it was kein Anleiger-frei Weg for us...asked for our ID's and driving-licence, told us to leave and if we were staying their to park our car at the Autohof. We promissed to do that and with a warning we could go....

Last December at Spangdahlem a Polizei VW-van was parked close to the forest at the Binsfeld-site. We drive close to the fence to read off the C-17s and drove back to Binsfeld. Officially it is forbidden to drive there and a german local man warned us that police was on patrol every day.... At that moment the police van came into our direction, we left in Binsfeld-village turning left and again left. We thought they lost us but..... Turning out Binsfeld into Spangdahlem direction the Polizei-VW was again in our back...GRRRRRR

Anyway, we drove further legally around the base into Spang-maingate direction. The Polizei took the left junction at the roundaboud heading to Bitburg.... :fist: So it was a great escape this time......

Spotting is hide and seek sometimes.....

Maurits

We were lucky indeed Maurits

If you go to Ramstein park at the Autohof (parkinglot near Burgerking and gasstation) and walk towards the landing.
Always make sure to have ID, drivinglicense and carpapers with you and be polite towards the security. (they are doing their job and very often understand our hobby!)
As Maurits says most of the time the police will have a look who is taking pictures of landing and departing aircraft. Last monday the serurity asked if we had photographed the base. He said it is NOT FORBIDDEN to tkae pictures of landing aircraft. Just be careful you won't be caught with pictures of infrastructure...
