Forum rules
ImageThis is the forum to share your recent aviation photos with the rest of the community, being photos not older than six months at the moment of topic opening. Theme-based topics, not about recent events, should go into the sub-forum.
Although we will not screen beforehand, we reserve the right to delete any images, especially if clearly unsharp or otherwise low in quality. For more information on how to upload you images, check this post.
In topic titles, please use airfield names in stead of just codes, and be clear about what kind of photos your viewers can expect (e.g. CIV/MIL, location etc.).

Finally, bring any photo criticism understandable and to the point, not cynical or offensive! Simultaneously, do not feel offended by criticism per se, but simply explain your motives, taste et cetera, or ignore if you wish so.

Mildenhall in the 70's and 80's

Post by herky »

I didn't find a Mildenhall photo topic here so I decided to start one. In those days Mildenhall was THE base with the most various types of aircraft visiting.
Especially in September/October (large exercises season) you could count on rare aircraft hitting the deck.

Martin, great photos! Those KC-97s are very impressive and beautiful, I wish I had seen them in real life. You always start too late...

Nice pictures , indeed , Martin! Especially that Greyhound , because I flew in one of them a long time ago!
Here is one I took at Mildenhall in 1970 : a Grumman Trader of the U.S.Navy. :P

googled the serial and found: "It is an NC-135A, serial number 60-0371, one of three of this series. These planes were used by the USAF and Atomic Energy Commission to monitor nuclear tests after the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty from 1965 through 1972. They were called Rivet Diggers for the name of the program under which they were converted from C-135As to NC-135s. During 1972, the aircraft supported a project between NASA, Los Alamos National Lab, and the Sandia National Lab which examined "high-altitude ionospheric injections and rocketborne experiments." This had the airplanes deployed to Eielson AFB, AK, Christchurch, NZ, American Samoa, and Hawaii. They were also involved in experiments with a navigational system under development called GEANS; crew members stayed at Holloman for a week at a time. Also, it was used as a support and target aircraft for the Airborne Laser Laboratory program at Kirtland in the '70s and '80s. All 3 aircraft were based at Kirtland AFB, NM until withdrawn from service."
