I like the middle one, the obscure one with the crew. Really looks like a snapshot from the 40's. The rest I would prefer as good quality color photos. ;)

Nice pics, but could you maybe level them as in all pictures the horizon is not leveled (or is that also a '40s style :-)

Nice pics and a creative pitch. You might consider adding some grain (korrel) for authenicity when you are re-editting them.

How do you make those darker edges? Just by selecting an area and smoothing it out, after that making it black?

I very much like the idea of taking ´dated´ pictures of historical subjects. And the B-25 with the crew and the low picture of the Spits really does give that historical idea.
But, I am sorry, other than that I think you gave it a good try, but it doesn´t really work. The first three pictures for example have too many non original things in the background (people mostly). The others are in black and white, but miss the low quality idea of real historical pictures.
A better idea (if you can), might be to take them in/convert them to Sepia colours. That usually gives a much more dated look. And also, pay attention to the subjects on the picture, as any modern day car/person/burger bar or whatever can kill the idea.

Please don´t take this the wrong way. I know giving criticism is always easier than doing it and the only way to get better is to do it.... not to give criticism....

That can be done with the very same filter in Photoshop with which dark edges can be removed. Just use it in the opposite direction.

How is it called, can't find it

What I do is make new layer and select all, you'll get those walking ants around your picture. In the Select menu I use first the modify/border function, with 5 pixels or so. Than again in the select menu, modify/feather function with a maximum of 250 pixels, depends how big your picture is. This will round of the edges of your selection area. After this I take the gradient tool(set one of the colors on black) and make a gradient outside the picture. If it's done the right way you'll end up with a blackening edges. Now you only need to adjust the opacity of the layer to your likings.

But if it can be done much easier and quicker with a filter, that would be great!!!!

Hi there,

got to Filter, then Distort, the Lens Correction
Now you can reduce vignetting by moving the vignette slider to the right. Otherwise, you can introduce it by moving it to the left.

Your layers method also works, but IMHO qulifies for a Complexity Award :P

Hans.

BTW, I use Photoshop CS3
