GLV5, How to be hunted by a Redskin

GLV5, How to be hunted by a Redskin

Hi All,

Today I had an excellent day at the GLV5 area; we were
able to take shots of a very close range of a Wildcat and
a Redskin =] The wather was really perfect and sow was
the flying activity ^^ The Apache used me as an target for
his exersize; this resulted in some nice pictures =] Hope
you like them also.

Hi Alex et all,

It was nice that you joined us yesterday. Besides perfect weather we had a great day out in GLV-5, with pleny of activity and loads of good photo opportunities. Between 09.00 - 15.00 hrs GLV-5 was visited by Cougars (3x) and Apaches (2x). Flight ops stopped around 14.45 hrs, presumably for the arrival ceremony of a killed soldier at Eindhoven, for which a C-130 and Fokker 50 made an overhead pass which could be seen from GLV-5. At that point we decided to leave after a fantastic day in the sand.

Below you will find some of my rsults. Hope you like them...

Around 10.30 hrs AS532 S-400 (Wildcat 35) arrived for some training runs. It did several setups at three different locations in GLV-5.

Take-offs from the dusty areas result in local sand storms. Here S-400 (Wildcat 35) clears the sand cloud on its way out.

GLV-5 consists of "bos, heide en zand", all scattered in patches. After the sand S-400 (Wildcat 35) moved to on to hover over the "heide".

In the afternoon S-400 came in again, this time using Wildcat 36 as callsing and different landing area’s.

GLV-5 was buzzing in the afternoon, when a Cougar and two Apaches were using the small area at the same time. Although this may sound great, each helicopter uses it’s own part of the area, and it’s virtually impossible to catch all the action.

AH-64D Q-18 (Bat 73), spent quite a lot of time in the central GLV-area, doing lot of exciting tactical manouvering.

Q-18 (Bat 73) made numerous interesting setups, flying all over the area. Fortunately it did quite a lot of hovering and turning within range of our cameras.

Two captains and a bottle of Spa Blauw leaving the area. This shots clearly shows how close the action was to our cameras, as this is an uncropped shot of a 400mm on a Canon EOS-5D Mark II (which is about similar to a 250mm lens on a Canon EOS-40D)

Besides helicopters, GLV-5 is also used for other types of training. Today two groups of police cross-country motorists used the sandbox for rough country practice, as well as this funny vehicle. We tried to persuade the driver to do a few more turns for us, but he quickly drove out of range of our cameras.

Some time ago someone posted a link to a different page how the find the GLV5. Hope I can find the spot better but cannot find the linked site anymore. Can someone post me the link of point the right direction.

A great example of the "wonderfull" decision to remove the watertanks and switch to water bottles, i really hope it didn't fall down in the cockpit.
