Tel Aviv - Ben Gurion (Lod) (TLV / LLBG) November 2011

Post by StMaartenpiloot »

My November holiday I am spending wth and at family in Israel. I've been here before and visited the Israel airforce museum in the past but never spotted civil aircraft here. This time this will change and this morning (17th) I went for a drive to find some places (it was raining all morning) First I went to Dov airport the local one North of Tel Aviv, I found the board walk near the sea where they come flying by. Then I went to Ben Gurion and a miracle happened because the rain stopped :D

I only edit my photos via flickr.com at the moment.

first one from the beach at Rishon Lezion, I didn't expect them to fly in from there so I didn't drag my 50-500mm with me only 200mm

This one was the surprise of the day, shame that it was directly behind the fence. No markings on the aircraft.
Since I started in 2005 with spotting I'd like to know about this aircraft so please leave a comment.
I also made a video of the start and the noise at that moment almost made my ears pop, this one I'll post when I get home.

That last one is probably an Israeli Air Force Boeing 707 equipped with an IAI Phalcon radar (that ugly thing in the nose). It's used as an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) platform, much like the E-3 Senry. Chile operates one too.

Some nice frames over there by the way ;)
Cheers,
Gideon

That IAI Phalcon 707 is quite a coup! But errmmm... But about all that security hanging round Ben Gurion?
And I am not talking about all those fences...

Thanks Gietje for the info!

Well security, didn't see many people only one strange guy (probably security) walking round my car acting to look at aircraft but trying to look into the car.
Before I went I asked a local guy for some info, didn't get much because of the language barrier (not much English and even his Hebrew was bad my wife said)
So I just read some forums and looked at some youtube movies about spotting at Ben Gurion. And it all looked safe to me and just went there. My brother in law told me that it is also possible to photograph fighter jets near the base as long as you do not make photos of the base. (so stay away some km)

Maybe I'll meet some security the coming week!

Hi Pieter,

Nice shot of this rare 707. It should be 246(4X-JYS), belongs to IAI- stored there for many years now, sometimes they do some test flights. I doubt it will be ever deliver to the FACh.

Regards,

Maurits
kind regards,

Maurits

Pieter,
Be carefull! It's no joke, photography is off limits for foreigners (and for Israeli's).

Dear Gents,

Interesting shot of the 707. I am sure it will not go to or is a FACh aircraft as that air force is keen to replace their 707 within the next years or so.

For more on the FACh E-707 'Condor' check the current December issue of Combat Aircraft Magazine ;-)

Cheers,

CJ.

The bad weather finally cleared today so time to photograph the IL96 in its full glory.
They used another configuration of the runway so I had to find another spot, East of the airport there is a nice road where you can park the car next to the road and photograph the aircraft from the car.

Ah, good to see you're back "safe and sound", i.e. not being detained by local Israeli security authorities...

No people who have never been there are to scared and have a meaning, me too in the beginning but I had contact with several nice people in Israel via pm (after reading above messages) who told me that it is no problem to take photos round Ben Gurion. (thats the only way to find out like in the spotters guide)

Pieter,
Have been many times to Israel myself, as I was married to an Israeli girl. But the contacts I had, and still have is that photography around the airport is strictly forbidden.
The authorities take it very serious. But as always....on your own risk!
