Low flying area in the French Alps?

Post by Basman »

A bit of a vague question....just for curiosity.

My sister was on holiday in the French alps and while walking over a mountain ridge, she heard a rumbling noise and was then surprised to see two fighter jets flying through the gorge below her. She told me she could clearly see them from above.

Has she discovered a French version of the Mach loop/Rainbow Canyon or is there a well known LFA somewhere in the French alps? I don't recall to have ever seen pictures of such an LFA in France.

Best regards,

Bas

A map for the LFA ( or RTBA in French ): https://www.targeta.co.uk/pages/rtba_map.htm
The corresponding article: https://www.targeta.co.uk/low_level_rtba.htm

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, very interesting read with great pictures.
However, the area she saw the jets is not indicated on this map as an LFA. I got some more details from her. She walked a trail on the 'Col de la Coulette'. If you draw a line from Grenoble to Nice, it would be roughly halfway. No LFA there on the map.
