Mexico-City Benito Juárez (MMMX/MEX) 2008

Post by Boudewijn van Oirschot »

Hi!

This year in May I planned a holiday in Mexico, Cancun. I make a stop-over in Mexico City. Are there any spotting facilities or windows to photograph the exotical airliners ? 8)

No spotting facilities are in Mexico City, but from the terminals you can see about everything. I hope you arrive during daytime, as it is dark early and the airport lighting is not as good as here.

You can also walk out of the airfield to the left and after a mile or so turn left again and whop you're between the landing lights. But I suppose with a stopover you don't exit the airport.

Also the 2nd terminal is now open to which some companies have changed their habitat: Delta, Aeromexico and some exotic ones.
The 2nd terminal is on the West part of the airfield (also Cargo). the rest (middle and east) is for everything else. The 2 runways are parallel to the building as you can see in Google Earth and with daylight and a proper lense you can see everything moving. You have to be in either arrivals or departures though.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday.

Michel

P.S. for anything else about Mexico don't hesitate to ask, I have worked there last year and been to the country 10 times or so, in most of the center and east.

May I also suggest http://www.scramble.nl/airports.php?icao=mmmx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ?
And we will be happy to receive updates, if there are any.

I am not a member so I cannot look on the Cancun section. But now they have a 2nd floor there (with restaurants) from which you can see a lot if you are departing. Also they have a new terminal for international flights on one side of the airfield. A lot of european Airlines (mostly charters, like Monarch stay on this platform. Be sure to have your camera ready as you get out of the plane and you will be able to make some nice shots. I never had any problems with either security at Mexico City either. Security is tight but mostly centered around exits/customs. In Cancun is more security because of loads of people from the US being unloaded there. If you are going to visit Cozumel too, try to get to that airport, it is really nice and has some nice a/c.

Thanks all for the kind information :D
I have on my return flight some nice times so I hope I will be able to make some nice pics of the exotic airliners... especially Aeromexico :P
I also hope that there will come new updates for Cancun Airport BTW.

One question left, is a Fijifilm with 10x optical zoom enough for Cancun? (It's important for me to photograph Aeromexico, quality for pictures doesn't matter however...)

Regards, B'wijn

10x optical is enough for Cancun. I used to have the S5500 of Fuji too and makes good shots. The sun will probably be shining too!
There won't be too many Aeromexico a/c there probably (4 daily flights from/to Mexico City). Yo will see Aerocaribe though probably, Mexicana as well, Delta, Monarch, Martinair they all arrive about the same time.
At Mexico Cty there will be more of Aeromexico to see. It is like they have there own terminal there.

Okay, that's a pity about AM however I fly them to Mexico City, so I will catch AM once...
I heart that Cancun is an important airport for the European charters, as you said as well...

BTW, again thanks for all information.

At Mexico-City you can take pictures with 10x optical zoom. At place 3 at the Scramble map (McDonalds bridge) you are so close to the taxiway, that 10x might even be too much...... And the bridge before that (seen from the terminal) can give you great platform shots as well.
By the way, look out around the airport. Spotting is no problem, crime however is. I have had no problems there, but I have heard some pretty bad stories. So always keep your camera out of sight (when not taking pictures) and don't walk around with big photo suitcases or bags. And finally, DO NOT take any green beetle taxis in Mexico City! They are mighty cheap, until the moment you are left behing in some bad neighbourhood without bags, money and watches.....

Good luck

This is rubbish, unless you have firsthand experience, it is an urban legend. Whenever you take a cab whether green or not, check the nameplate of the driver with the licenseplate, as long as these numbers correspond it is ok, Erwin, they are cheap you are right about that, but in Mexico compared to Holland, what is not.
I have lived there and it is no different than any other big city so what Erwin says about stashing your cam when not taking pics is correct.

But I will keep my comment to this, as it is turning into the direction of Tattle Lounge.

I think I won't exit Mexico City Airport, cause of my short stop. So, It wouldn't be necessary to take a cab. Only in Cancun we'll take a taxi to the city centre... However we better should watch out

BTW, one last question, perhaps it is better for another forum but are there aviation shops at Mexico City or Cancun?

It smells to 't Praethuis... :P

Well questions about the airport still do fit in your original question I think.

I don't think Benito Juarez has an aviation store. At least I have never seen one, it is always very crowded and cramped though.
Also not according to this link http://www.expedia.com/daily/airports/mexicocity.asp

Cancun is just packed with taxfree shops like on Schiphol, and the usual souvenirs and restaurants. Unless anybody has seen them, I don't think Cancun has them either.

It has this link with a lot of info http://www.cancun-airport.com/So if moderators can also update the airport info with this link if it is not in there...

Oh and one last thing about the taxis in Mexico Cty, although you are not going out of the airport, they are taking out the green ones within the next few years (especially the rogue ones).

Ok, thanks for the links. I can't wait to go to Mexico make some nice pics in another corner of the world (before I have been in Africa and twice in South East Asia, so...)

I hope to get a lot of registrations so that I can put them here.
