Kuala Lumpur Intl (Sepang) WMKK/KUL - 2011

Spotting possibilties @ Kuala Lumpur International (KUL)

Will be travelling to Malaysia in 2 weeks for a short holiday. Since I have a stop over of several hours at Kuala Lumpur Int (KUL) . I was wondering what the spotting conditions are overthere.

Normally I always first turn to the scramble air field guide but to my surprise it does not mention KUL at all!?!? Was a bit surprised about that since it is one of the bigger hubs in Asia.

So if anyone has any tips.....

Thanks in advance

It has been a few years since I have last been (2006)
But there then I used the viewing area on the upper floors of the main terminal.
General view of the airport, taxi way infront closeenough for photography,
Some cargo movemenst a bit too distant, well what used to be Cargo is now the LCC Terminal I guess.

any updates on this?
I would love to know if there are some spots outside the airport for spotting.
Is it at all legal to spot outside? (I'd hate to be missing my connecting flight).

I don´t know how much time you have between flights, but unless it is many hours, you might not want to try the outside. There are no spotting points close to the terminal, so you would have to take a long walk around one of the runways (if that is possible), or take a taxi. For a transfer the best option is to stay in the terminal (both airside and in the above mentioned inside viewing deck), but be warned that the windows are a hell to take pictures through. You can see just about everything, although a large deal in a distance, but the glass is very ripled making it sometimes even very difficult to read numbers.

You can take a look at www.malaysianwings.net for KUL (as well as other Malaysian airports) spotting information...

Enjoy your stay/spotting !!!

I've got about 15 hours... :S
(arrive at 06:30, depart at 21:30).
I do have an hotel (included in the transfer option offered by MAS, don't know yet what hotel it is).

Walking could be an option, but it looks like a very big aiport, and not sure about the weather though. ;)
Taxi is certainly an option, but hate to get stranded out there.
Any ideas on taxi fares?

Still, I would have to know what to tell the taxi driver on where I want to go. :)
I don't feel much for windowed photography.

Taxi fares are not very high, expect about 5-10 euro to go anywhere near the airport. However, if you take a taxi from the terminal you have to buy a ticket in advance at one of the counters. So unless you are very sure of where to go, it is very difficult to explain them where you want to go... Unfortunately I cannot help you with places where you can spot from the outside.

Note that the airportarea is indeed extremely big. Travel between the main terminal and for example the Low cost terminal takes a long time. By road, the low cost terminal is about 20 km (!!!) from the Main Terminal Building.

I once missed a connecting flight despite landing on time and a 2,5 hr transfer time (!!)

Oh and the shuttle busses between the terminals are not free of charge ;)
