EgyptAir Flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo 'disappears from radar'

An EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo has disappeared from radar, the Egyptian airline says.

It says there are 59 passengers and 10 crew members on board Flight MS804.

The aircraft was flying at 37,000ft (11,300m) when it went missing over the eastern Mediterranean. An official said the plane lost contact with radar at 02:45 Cairo time (00:45 GMT).

The company said it would issue an update "when more information becomes available".

EgyptAir said the plane disappeared about 10 miles (16km) into Egyptian air space.

It said the concerned authorities had been notified, and search and rescue teams were now looking for the aircraft.

The search operation is being co-ordinated with the Greek authorities.

According to the flightradar24.com website, which tracks passenger flights around the globe, the plane is an Airbus A320.

The aircraft left Paris at 23:09 local time on Wednesday (21:09 GMT) and was scheduled to arrive in the Egyptian capital soon after 03:00 local time on Thursday.

An EgyptAir flight which disappeared from radar screens en route from Paris to Cairo early Thursday, crashed into the sea off the southern Greek island of Karpathos while in Egyptian airspace, a Greece aviation source told AFP.

“At around 0029 GMT (3:29 am) when it was in Egyptian airspace, the plane disappeared from Greek radars... it crashed around 130 nautical miles off the island of Karpathos,” the source told AFP.

12:52 Hollande: 'We must do everything to find crash debris'

"We have also the duty to know everything about the causes of what has happened, no hypothesis should be ruled out or preferred.

"I want that everything should be put at the disposition of the Greek and Egyptian authorities so that we can liaise with them.

"We have to send them ships and planes to make sure and to locate where the plane has crashed, and to do whatever we can to collect the debris that will allow us to know and find the truth."

Radar plots are not milimeter accurate - apparent sharp movements could simply indicate sections of the aircraft being out of control during or following a very rapid break-up.

A ship captain who had earlier posted on his Facebook page that he was involved in the search for debris has now posted images of what he says is a lifejacket in the sea.

Tarek Wahba is an employee of the Maersk shipping company from Alexandria. He said a lifejacket and part of an airplane chair were found, but it is not clear where.

EgyptAir crash: 'Debris found' from flight MS804

Egypt's military and national airline say debris from the crashed EgyptAir flight has been recovered in the Mediterranean.

Egypt's army spokesman said wreckage and passenger belongings were found 290km (180 miles) from Alexandria.

EgyptAir also confirmed the discovery on its Twitter feed.

Initial reports late on Thursday, based on Egyptian officials' comments that wreckage had been found, later proved unfounded and were dismissed by Greek officials.

Greece has not yet commented on the latest discovery.

A body part, seats and one or more items of luggage have been found by crews searching for the wreckage of EgyptAir Flight MS804, Greece's defence minister has confirmed.

"A few hours earlier we were informed (by Egyptian authorities) that a body part, two seats and one or more items of luggage where found in the search area," Panos Kammenos told a news conference.

Mr Kammenos said the items were found in the search area slightly to the south of where the aircraft had vanished from radar, and slightly north of some earlier, unconfirmed debris sightings.

He said the aircraft had not deviated from its planned flight path through Greek airspace.
Oceanographer Dr Simon Boxall tells the BBC that Flight MS804 went down in a very difficult part of the Mediterranean to search.

"I think the assumption is that this is a shallow water area but it's not, this part of the Mediterranean is really quite deep," he said.

"We only have limited information about the crash location, but if it is where this debris has been found then it sits on a boundary where the ocean floor is more like the Alps, very rugged and contoured.

"That area borders a large, deep plain about 3km down."

Dr Boxall said an aircraft such as the A320 could easily "slip through the cracks" of the ocean floor in the area.

"This is a very soft sediment area and wreckage could sink very quickly, so they need to find it fast," he said.

The ocean floor ridges could also act to block signals from the black box pinger, and sonar from vessels searching for the wreckage, he said.

"Having thought this was a relatively simple one, it could actually be very difficult."

EgyptAir: 'Smoke detected' inside cabin before crash

There were smoke alerts inside the cabin of the EgyptAir passenger plane before it crashed in the Mediterranean on Thursday, reports say.

Smoke was detected in the toilet and the aircraft's electrics, just minutes before the signal was lost, according to data published on air industry website the Aviation Herald.

However, there has been no independent confirmation.

French marine wreckage specialists ALSEAMAR will join the hunt for the data recorders from EgyptAir flight MS804, the head of Egypt's air accident investigations said.

A week after the Airbus A320 crashed into the Mediterranean with 66 people on board, including 30 Egyptians and 15 from France, investigators have no clear picture of its final moments.

Search teams are working against the clock to recover the flight recorders,
because the signals that help locate them in deep water cease transmitting after about 30 days.

"A ship from the French company ALSEAMAR moved from the French island of Corsica to the search area," Ayman al-Moqadem, Egypt's head of air accident investigations, said.

Negotiations were also underway to contract a second firm to search more than one area at once.
The search for the emergency locator transmitter (ELT) is also underway and focused on a 5 km area, Moqadem said.
The ELT is designed to transmit a distress signal in the event of an aircraft accident.
He said a report would be issued by the investigating team one month from the date of the crash.

No new radio signal has been received from an EgyptAir jet since the day it crashed in the Mediterranean last week, sources close to the investigation said on Friday.

Media reports on Thursday suggested that a new signal had allowed officials to further home in on where the black box recorders might be located.

A radio signal picked up on the day of the crash from the plane's emergency locator transmitter (ELT) allowed officials to determine a broadly defined search zone,
but nothing new has since been detected, the sources told Reuters.

"There has been nothing since day one," a source familiar with the investigation said.

Since the Airbus A320 crashed on May 19 with 66 people on board, including 30 Egyptians and 15 from France, no clear picture of its final moments has emerged.

A French vessel carrying specialist probes designed to detect black box pinger signals arrived on Friday at the search zone, sources on the investigation committee said.

The vessel contains equipment from ALSEAMAR, a subsidiary of French industrial group Alcen,
that can pick up black-box pinger signals over long distances up to 5 km (3 miles), according to the company's website.

These are separate from the signals transmitted by the ELT,
which sends a radio signal upon impact that is not designed to continue emitting once the plane is submerged underwater,
said a source familiar with the investigation.

The French vessel will conduct a deepwater search in "four or five" areas within the 5 km search zone believed to contain the two black boxes,
with the possibility of expanding the zone should nothing be detected, the source said.
