Ethiopian Airlines Crash 25-01-10

Post by flying_kiwi »

An Ethiopian Airlines B737-800 has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea shortly after takeoff this morning from Beirut on a flight to Addis Abeba.
The aircraft was carrying 83 passengers and 7 crew. Search and rescue operations are underway, but at the time the aircraft dissappeared from radar, there was thunderstorms and heavy rain in the area, and residents of a nearby village on the coast reported seeing a 'ball of fire' crashing.

Despite initial media reports that there were as many as 7 survivors, these have been retracted. Apparently there have only been 5 bodies recovered so far, although search and rescue efforts are continuing.

Still not entirely clear which aircraft was involved. Avherald is now reporting the its most likely the ET-ANB based on the 2002 construction year mentioned during a press conference of Ethiopian Airlines. This would make it the former Ryanair EI-CSW.
More than 20 bodies have been recovered at this time.

1) aircraft in question is not ET-AMZ (or your pictured G-CEJP), but ET-ANB (ex EI-CSW) as Flying_Kiwi mentioned already.

2) I don't the idea that you use a picture of "AJ Best" without placing at least his copyright with it, and re-upload it from your own photobucket account. I wonder also if you got permission to use it by yourself and re-publish here again...

Very sad day for aviation and Boeing 737NG as it is the third accident with this aircraft (after Turkish Airlines and American Airlines) within a year... Of course it does not say anything about this aircraft... RIP to all passengers who died. Fortunately no Dutch plane were on board.

Airfleets.net also mentions the ET-AMZ and Airliners.net mentions ET-ANB!

It is very confusing...

It is very confusing...
Ethiopian Airlines confirmed in a press release last night that the aircraft involved was indeed the ET-ANB.
The Lebanese authorities have requested the assistance of the French BEA (Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses) to perform the investigation into the accident, and the NTSB has already dispatched an investigator to assist in the preliminary stages.
As mentioned on A.net, the circumstances do bear some resemblance to the Kenya B738 crash in Cameroon, and the Flash B733 crash in Egypt, but there is very little to go on at the moment as to what factors may have played a role in this accident.
