India looking for carrier-borne fighters: Sea Gripen

Post by ehusmann »

Picked this up from a modellers forum; India is sending RFIs to manufacturers for new carrier-borne fighters. SAAB has also recieved it according to this article in Stratpost and will pitch the Sea Gripen :worship:

Even more interesting in my mind is this quote:
Stratpost wrote:Saab is already bidding for the 126 Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) tender of the Indian Air Force (IAF), for which it has offered an advanced version of the Gripen NG, called the Gripen IN.
So we are offered the Gripen NG, while there is already a more advanced version, the Gripen IN? What kind of ==censored== would we be getting then? :grumble:

Sounds like a desperate move from Saab to keep something new about the JAS-39 coming ... I think they gave up the KLu deal some time ago and look forward to better deals (like the IAF) ...

I only don't understand the move from India for requesting a carrier-version-idea for the Gripen as they are currently taking delivery of a nice number of MIG-29's also for carrier operations ... (there ain't that much space on a carrier, so that would be crowded then)

Hi,

Looks like the MiG.29's are some sort of intrim sollution. Indians also requested information about the F-35B/C. And They getting a new carrier(s).
To make sure the F-35 isn't the only possible candidate they hope for a navalised Gripen. (also interresting for the UK!?!?!)

Don't think that the British will be interested. It will mean that they must change the complete design of the carriers. Also fitting them with catapults. Doubt if they will go that way.

Hmmm ... due to financial cuts they already 'lost' 1 carrier for the UK Navy, completly change the other one would be 'suïcide' as that would never be approved by the Politics (as this would raise the budget even higher) ...

For the design of the carriers all options (Catapult or no catapult) are still open, and no (official) decision is made over bying only one carrier. This decision will be made after the next election (this year). The carriers are developed with the possibility to add a catapult later in the operational live of the carrier(s). As the livespan of the carriers (50 years) is longer than the livespan of the (possible) first F-35B (!?) fighters (30 years). If the F-35B is choosen, there are also talsk of bying the F-35C which is cheaper, but would need a catapult. The UK needs drastic budgatary cuts, which could involve less carriers of less or cheaper fighters. The F-35B is the most expensive version of the 3 Lightning desings.

But building a navalised Gripen won't be cheap. But maybe cheaper for the Indians than buying eg. the Rafale!?

Maybe, but although not mentioned in the article, the RFI has been sent to several manufacturers, including Dassault. So it is not like the Sea Gripen is almost chosen or anything. It is just one of the options and I would say, one of the least obvious options.

Looking to the inventory of the current IAF I would say that a SU-30 version (similar to the Russian Su-27K) might be a good option to look into (or a MIG-35K instead of the MIG-29K), don't outrule the Rafale as Dassault is desperatly looking to an export order (so then the deal might become interesting for the IAF as they have a lot of controle) and don't forget that the naval Rafale is allready available and doesn't requires a new frame to be designed, build and tested ...
