7/29/2010 - ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- An Air Force C-17 Globemaster III, assigned to the 3rd Wing here, crashed about 6:14 p.m. (Alaska time) July 29.
At the time of the accident, it was on a local training mission.
Four aircrew were on board, and their condition is unknown at this time. First responders are on scene.
A board of officers will investigate the accident, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

I very much doubt it, as 99-0168 was noted departing Lakenheath yesterday, whilst the unfortunate bird crashed while on a local training flight practising for the upcoming airshow.
No need to go speculating, just wait untill the number comes up. It's sad enough as it is.
In a statement Thursday, 3rd Wing commander Col. John McMullen said, "Our deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of those airmen killed in this crash. Yesterday, we lost four members of our Arctic Warrior family and it's a loss felt across our entire joint installation. Right now, our immediate focus is on providing all possible support to the loved ones of our fallen aviators.
Four airmen were killed in a cargo plane that crashed during a training run at an Air Force base, military authorities said Thursday. The crash sent a fireball hundreds of feet into the air, witnesses said.
Three of the men were in the Alaska Air National Guard and the fourth was on active duty at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Air Force Col. John McMullen said. Their names have not been released pending notification of relatives.
"We lost four members of our Arctic Warrior family and it's a loss felt across our entire joint installation," McMullen said in a statement, referring to Elmendorf and its adjacent Army base, Fort Richardson.
The C-17 was from the 3rd Wing, based at Elmendorf near downtown Anchorage. The crash happened about 6:14 p.m. during a training demonstration for an upcoming weekend air show, Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins said.
Anchorage Fire Dept. Captain Bryan Grella said his crew was just finishing dinner at about 6:30 p.m. at the downtown fire station when something caught his eye.
"It was a big, gray plume of smoke, and I saw a fireball go up in it," he said. The fireball extended about 750 feet in the air, he estimated.
The crash is the second in Anchorage this summer. In June, one child was killed and four others burned when a small plane crashed after taking off from the city's small-airplane airport downtown.
And days after the June plane crash, a small plane landed on a busy highway in Anchorage. There were no injuries.
Gov. Sean Parnell and Sen. Mark Begich issued statements late Wednesday expressing sadness over the crash and sending well-wishes to members of the military.
"Alaskans are very connected to the military, and our thoughts and prayers are with Alaska's Air Force family," Parnell said

Well spoken indeed. However let us also respect the persons who like to know the number of the aircraft involved.
I'm among them, which doesn't mean i find the number more important than the fact people have lost their lives.
That being the worst thing ! But it's also a fact many people get killed each day, people that don't even make it to this board let alone the news...
And so it's also a fact that this remains a hobby for most of us, and therefor the number is of some importance too.
The crew that did the demo in Osan and Seoul in 2009 came from Alaska. We had the chance to talk to the pilot after one of his flights and he told us that there were 2 pilots in Elmendorf qualified to flying the demo.

If you are not interested in the serial, that is very fine for you, you don´t have to ask for it. Other people are however, life goes on you know. It is a very bad day for the people involved, their relatives, friends and the USAF. But most here are neither of them. I don´t go sit and cry in a corner about this, just like I don´t go and sit in the corner and cry about all the little children dying in Africa every day. So please, lets not overreact in these situations.
