Holidays in the Netherlands - Where are the helicopters?

Post by heliexperte »

Hello!

I hope this is the right place for my question.
I’m going to spend my summer holidays in the Netherlands, in Bergen aan Zee. During this time of course I will try to photograph as many helicopters as possible.

So I’m looking for any information for helicopters in this area.

The following places I found out by myself:

-Amsterdam UMCG – Lifeliner 1
-Amsterdam Heliport – Heli Holland Offshore (are any helicopters based permanently at the heliport or will I have to wait for some guest helicopters when I’m there? Are there often guests (I’ve read Lifeliner 1 is often there for refueling)? )
-Amsterdam Schiphol – Police helicopters (Are all dutch police helicopters based there? If not: Where are the other bases and is one of the new AW139 based at AMS?) Is this the right location?: 52.314966, 4.807817
Is there a special heliport or apron for guest helicopters and are they visible from the fence?
-Hilversum – Ryfas Helicopters (I also saw that there is a special thread for helicopters at this airfield – are there often guest helicopters? Or are any other helicopters based there?)
-Lelystad – Lelykopters, Heli Holland, Helicon Helicopters, Rotarywings(?) (which/how many helicopters are based there by these companies?) + museum
-Vlieland – B412 SAR
-Den Helder-De Kooy – Offshore and Marine Lynx/NH-90

On the way back home, in Germany I want to visit also Emden airport and others. In NL on the way from Bergen aan Zee to the german border I found these places:
-Leeuwarden – B412 SAR (Is there any chance to take some pics of the choppers from outside the air base?)
-Groningen UMCG – Lifeliner Europa 4
-Groningen Eelde airport – any helicopters based there or often guests?

Maybe some of you know the answers on my questions or can give information about other helicopters around? Doesn’t metter if private owned, military or preserved.

Thank you all for your help!

Greetings from Germany,
Johannes Herrmann

At Amsterdam (VU Hospital) photography is very difficult because the helicopter is based on the roof. A pre-arranged visit could be an option.

Amsterdam Heliport is not very busy as far as I know.

At Soesterberg (near Hilversum) you will find the MLM (military Aviation Museum) with some preserved Dutch military helicopters.

I guess there are about 10 - 15 helicopters based at Lelystad. Maybe someone has the correct answer.

All police helicopters are based at Amsterdam. Some of them are deployed to other locations (like Volkel). Guest helicopters at Schiphol will park at Schiphol-Oost.

The Lifeliner 4 at Groningen is also difficult to photograph, same reason as the Lifeliner 1.

Be aware that Vlieland is an island and it will cost some money (and time) to take the ferry.

At Rotterdam airport you will find the Lifeliner 2.

Jan Beima has made a very nice website will allmost al active Dutch heliports en airfields with helicopters based. Have a look at: http://www.helikopterfoto.nl/heliports.html

If you have more questions, just ask :D

Thanks for the link to this very interesting site.
But only helicopter companies or heliports are marked on the map. But I guess there are also several private or preserved helicopters on smaller airfields!? Can anyone give me some more information about?

In addition to the info Copter gave already:

Traffic is very slow here. Do not expect to see more than one or possible two helicopters. There is a small hangar that often houses one chopper and you can see it easily through the windows. Seeing one actually move is a different thing. During the weekend you will most likely see nothing move, during the week only if you are very lucky.

Yes that is the right location. You can easily see the Police choppers from there, just park you car near the hangars of Schiphol east (no parking fee, but maximum parking time during weekdays). Guest helicopters park on east like Copter mentioned and are easily visible from the fence, just sometimes obstructed by other planes on the platform.

A good source for preserved helicopters is this site: http://www.eurodemobbed.org.uk/index.html
However, I don´t think it has any civil planes listed.

Hi,

It seems probably the most interesting helibase for your taste in the Netherlands: De Kooy! Several offshore helicopters to be seen there, next to our Dutch Navy examples of course. And not that far from your holiday location Bergen aan Zee!
If military choppers are to be included, you should consider Gilze Rijen as well. Furthermore, Emmercompascuum, main base of Heli Holland and close to the German border, could be interesting but I have never visited the place myself.

On Amsterdam heliport are at least 2 ec120's located. The offshore helicopter is at emmercompascuum at the moment.

As for Leeuwarden you have to be lucky.
They can enter the field from any direction.
The best way to see them is not the best, but what I sometimes did was waiting at the parking garage of the MCL hospital in Leeuwarden.
There you can make some great shots.

Aviodrome, Leystad themapark (museum) presents a few rotorcraft, including a suspended Bo-105 (llifeliner).
plus, in a dark corner, also suspended, The famous SOBEH-2 plus a NHI H-3 Kolibri.
all 3: main hall.
Outside (?): Dauphin

airfield Midden-Zeeland (near Goes), gyrocopter museum, lots of gyro's and one heli. many airworthy.

main base Helicon, Bergen op Zoom, heliport poorly marked, hidden apron, not spotterfriendly afaik, only from outside photo's. daily activity is somewhat unpredictable.

go get em'!
