Some 80's and 90's pix off Twenthe AB

Some 1994 shots made at Twenthe, the PD808 MM61952 was based here in June94 as ECM-participant in the Falcon Nut exercise.



F-16B J-068 with 313sq tiger tail in better times, it crashed last year September at Volkel..



F-16A J-253 was together with J-251 both from 313sq the KLu demo- F-16s for season 1994.

As I can remember they were phrom the Phirebirds, no 56. squadron.

Actually the Phantom FGR2's were from 23 Sqn. stationed at Wattisham at that time.
Nowadays they fley with the E3D Sentry from Waddington.

No way. It was 23 Sqn. What you mean is a rotation (or an excersise) with 74 Sqn (Tigers !) in March 1991. Three Phantom FGR2's from 74 Sqn were present at the time and two from 228 OCU.

Lovely thoose RAF Smokers, saw them a lot at Wildenrath. Unfortunately no good camera at that time...

You want some smokers? I've got some.
On Tuesday the 7th of June 1983 a District of Columbia F4D made an emergencylanding on Twenthe. It was the 66-7693/DC with squadronleader markings of the 121TFS. It was accompanied by three more Phantoms. The 66-7561/DC, 66-7634/DC and the 66-7677/DC.
They were deployed to Finningley at the time. The 66-7693 got fixed and departed Twenthe on Friday the 10th on a spectacular way. A very low flypast over the flightline of 315 squadron. But before that the F4D's showed up every day at Twenthe. The 66-7634 and the 66-7677 on Wednesday. The 66-7531 (new one), 66-7561, 66-7634 and the 66-7612 on Tuersday.
One of the highlights in my "spottingcareer" for sure.

It sure brings back memories.
Come to think about it, I made those pix with just a simple Nikon EM and an even more simple Panagor 135/2.8 lens.
Nowadays everybody has big lenses with big camera's. You couldn't afford those in the old days. Too expensive for a fourteen yeard old !

I was curious about the fate of the DC F4's. So I looked it up in the famous Scramble database.
The 66-7693 is nowadays preserved as "67478" at Fargo IAP. Fate of the 66-7561 is unknown. As is the 66-7677. They departed for Amarc and were never seen since. The 66-7634 is an instructional airframe at Saylor Creek. However it has not been seen since May 99. The fuselage of 66-7531 is a range target at Fort L. Wood. Last seen in March 2005. So it still could be there today.
