Request: Military aircraft spotting in China

Post by ChrisGlobe »

Hi all,
Has anyone been to China on the hunt for military aircraft?

I'm looking to spend 14 days in China in November 2014, around the time of AirshowChina at Zhuhai and fitting in the vaious military fields around Beijing where the VIP aircraft are based, as well as the following;

Tangshan - J7s
Xushui - JL8s
Yangcun - J11s
Yangquing - J7s
Zhouzhou - CJ6s
Zinhua - J7s

Has anyone visited the above, or anywhere in China, and have any tips (or a massive "don't even think about it!" warning? :P)

Thanks!

Haven't been to any of the bases you mentioned... but since you asked about spotting in general as well I'll share my single experience. I've been to Sanya-Yaxian which is situated right next to the hotels for the beach tourists. Lots of Russian tourists over there, so a white person with a camera on the beach is nothing unusual. I was standing next to military personnel when I took pictures like this:

I think the situation differs per airbase, but being cautious is always a good thing with this hobby.

I will never say "don't think about it", but having seen quite a few reports when not in tourist surroundings and with no Chinese appearance things can be very challenging! Most pictures seen came from taxying aircraft.

Also Army and Navy bases around Beijing are interesting!
