REQ.: Wreck in the mountains just west of Indio, California?

Post by jim5150jvc »

Sorry about the poor quality; I recorded this after participating in several hours of strenuous physical activity in this area and I was beyond exhausted. Had I been thinking more clearly, I would have taken some clearer shots to better identify this plane. But I was able to record the spot on my GPS: 33° 34.588'N, 116° 19.923'W http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNOcrUprqyo I could not find any information on it from any of the online databases. Can anybody find anything?

Looks like a big Naval prop driven bird judging the blue paint and the letter type. In the very close vicinity an F-6F Hellcat went down, but on the other hand those mountains are littered with airplane wrecks.

I sent the video to Trey Brandt yesterday, and he was able to identify it as a Douglas AD-5N Skyraider (SN#132525) that crashed there in 1960. No word yet on who the pilot was
