US Navy P-3C with hexcode

I may be wrong here,but I was always under the impression that US Orions have not operated using hex codes.

An Orion showed up in Thailand on the 10th March with hex code AE1D11.A source reported this airframe as being 158923,which is currently deployed in Japan with VP-4.

Comments?.

US orions are using mode-s, not all, but more and more are logged.
