Hello Boudewijn,

I visited EGLL last monday 7th and tuesday 8th April. Normally I would have lingered on one of the parkings near T1,2,3 but this supposedly is not allowed anymore. After arriving in T4, I tried to get into the departure area via the transfer signs. However, to enter the departure area again, you have to present a departure ticket.
So on monday I watched on the field near Hatton Cross (27L landing rwy) and after 15:00LT I walked to the other side, keeping the maintenance area on the lefthand side and the rest of the day watched near the roundabout below the 27R approach.
On tuesday I watched the movements all day on the "spottersplace" between Bath Road and the Northern Perimeter Road. On Bath Road is a McDonalds, cross the road direction BAA academy and the rwy and you can't miss it. It is covered, carparking (not free) available and a small restaurant in the BAA building. Unfortunately, they planted some trees between the grandstand and the runway.
A rundown of the spots:
In T4 for all runway combination's not possible to score all the numbers and for photography not good.
27L Hatton Cross From T4, underground or free bus (555, 556, 557) to Hatton Cross and walk to field. All landings on 27L OK for numbers/photography. Departures on 27R are partly visible (upper structure and tail) between the hangars but hard to read. After airborne you can see them in the distance. You can read off 27L departures and see 27R landings (with a steady hand and lots of mm even read off??)
Between 27L and 27R Near a busstop is a field with a good view on the 27R approach. Some guys were photographing from there with a lot of mm. 27L not visible.
Roundabout 27R The buses mentioned above should also pass this spot. OK for landings 27R for both numbers and photographs. 27R departures hard to see due to constructionwork and a hill. 27L not visible.
Spottersplace From T4 take free train to T1,2,3. From Heathrow Central Bus Station take free bus 105, 111, 285 direction Bath Road. THIS SPOT IS NOT GOOD FOR PHOTOGRAPHY. All movements are visible and ultimately 95% can be read off and with help of the EGLL/EGKK site mentioned above near 100% is possible. You need to note landing/departure times to use the site.
Landings + departures 27R ok, landings 27L visible but hard to read and departures 27L possible to read, but you have to be watchfull though.

Regarding the busnumbers, my hotel was on Bath Road and the hotel provided me with this information: Free Buses to and from Harlington Corner and EGLL are>>>>
105,111 and 285 busstop corner Bath Road/Harlington High Street to EGLL Central Bus Station and vv
555,556 and 557 busstop corner Harlington Street/NorthPerimeter Road to T4 via Hatton Cross and vv
Have a nice time!
Thank you for this information. I know the environment around Haton Cross (Tube Station) I have been there last year. So it's a long walk from the airport terminal 1-2-3 to the Bath Road and the Northern Perimeter Road if I want to see departures at least close as possible.
But there's one thing I don't understand: last year the planes did land at 27L and 27R... Were does the planes depart? Because Heathrow has two parallel runways only...

Grtz,
Boudewijn

Hello Boudewijn,

When 27 runway combinations in use, for noise abatement EGLL are changing runways at exactly 15:00LT. When using the 09 runway combination, usually they stick to 09L landing and 09R departure.
So during my visit, the day started with landings on 27L and departures on 27R. I understand that on other days they begin the day the other way around (27R landing, 27L departure). Shortly before 15:00LT, the outbounds are directed to the other runway, in my case 27L and had to await the last landing on that runway. And indeed, 14:59LT the last landing on 27L, 15:01LT the first landing on 27R and the first departure 27L. Sometimes, an individual aircraft is in luck, e.g. on tuesday the RAAF B737 was allowed to depart from the landing runway.
So, when 27 is in use it's not possible to stay the whole day near the departure runway.
And walking from T1,2,3 to Bath Road is indeed very long and I'm not sure you're allowed to use the tunnel as a pedestrian. Use the buses, they're free.

Spotting place when 09L/R in use

Post by MAS017 »

Guys,

The BAA building is a good place for reading off 27R (and 27L) traffic, but where to go when 09L/09R is in use :?:

Will be visiting LHR tomorrow 12may08 between 1000-1835 hrs (BD102/113) and would like to do some photography, given the excellent weather predictions...

Is there a possibility to reach the area by bus from the Central Bus Terminal :?:

Hope to meet some of you tommorow
