In the morning both runways are in use, around 15:00 the 27R/L combination changes. 27L is Always (when I was at LHR) in use between 07:00 and 15:00. After 15:00 runway 27R was in use for landing. When there is westernly wind, in the morning both runway 25s are in use (between 6 and 7).
Is there any pattern in the arrivals? That some airlines use only the 27L and others the 27R?

Is there a way to find out if there will be any cargo flights (or any other special things)?

I didn't have to work today so me and a friend went to Schiphol. We arrived around 07:00h at runway 36R to catch some of the landing aircraft, including the Cathay A340 and China Southern A330. I stayed several times in the Welcome Inn hotel in Kloten. It ain't the cheapest one, but it is a good hotel.
It takes about 15min to reached the airport by foot, but there is also a shuttlebus to the terminal (every 30min) (free of charge).

Although a bit of backlight in the morning, I still love those shots! I was at Zurich from June 18th till the 22th. Parkhaus P3 is a very good alternative in the morning. This is what you get:
