General

Agra is best known for the illusive Taj Mahal, a must see although it is a bit of a tourist trap. The large influx of tourists has not had much influence on the airfield, its civil terminal is rather obscure and flights are not frequent. Most people arrive from Delhi by train at the nearby Agra Cantonment train station or come by bus. So, Agra is mainly a military transport base.

Layout

Agra is a cantonment, many military barracks are dotted around the city and the vicinity of the airport is one of the prime locations. The main runway is southwest-northeast. The south side holds the Il-76 transports and their hangars. The west side is An-32 territory; the large disused dispersal area is in the far northwest corner. On the north side ramp, the Il-78 tanker fleet can be found. The civil terminal is on the far east side and is only accessible about two hours before a flight is scheduled that day. The northeast gate is the entrance for that.

Getting There

If you can, try to travel here by air. Although there are some spots around the airfield, they do not match the possibilities you get while taxiing to and from the runway. The early morning express train from Delhi is a good alternative. Online ticketing is possible.

Around the Airport

1Terminal

The terminal is not in the best spot. The south side crash gate offers views of the easternmost dispersals. The terminal itself only offers some views after checking in, basically on the same dispersals. When these are occupied the Il-76 block the view on the distant main ramp. The taxiway is relatively nearby though.

2Southwest side approach - a.m.

With a car you can venture into the farmland on the west side of the airfield. Take the small road at the point were the Jagnair road has finished circumnavigating the cantonment area of the airport. Continue straight for about 500 metres and you will be some 200 metres from the centreline, but still 1.2 km from touchdown.

3Southwest side approach - p.m.

Continuing on the road from spot 2 you can under pass the landing. Make a right immediately after that. When the road bends left towards a gate, find a spot to the right.

4Northeast side approach railway track

Although you can catch a glimpse of aircraft taking off at the northwest gate, this is far from ideal. The houses and perimeter wall block your view, not to mention the presence of a guard and many locals. Another possibility is to take the side road towards the railway. Walk towards the airfield and scale the embankment.

5From the aircraft

When leaving from runway 05 the aircraft will take the runway to backtrack but also part of the taxitracks. A left side window view offers views of the southern ramps. However, a right hand side seat provides a view of the northern ramp and An-32s. So travel in pairs ;-)
