This quiet airstrip in the southern suburbs of Fort Worth is home to a resting Skytrain in reasonably good condition. Another motivation to plan a stop here is taking in the atmosphere of a tiny airstrip, surviving amidst continuously expanding areas of new homes. Regular traffic varies in size from ultralights to twin piston props.
Surrounded more and more by new real estate, the field itself reminds of bush flying. The 1200m runway is only 9m wide and there is nothing fancy about Sycamore Strip. Contrary to airstrips in the bush however, this one clearly does not encourage visits with closed fences all around. Luckily, that does not hamper viewing the planes, even when the urban areas do not offer such possibilities.
From the Fort Worth South Loop 820 (I-20 and I-820), take exit 436A onto the 731 southbound. Sycamore School Road is the third major crossing road from here, and Cunningham Street is a small turn-off. Sycamore School Road connects in the east to the I-35W, exit 43 from the north (Fort Worth Loop) or exit 42 from the south.
C-47 N583V has been sitting at Sycamore Strip for years, and was photographed late September 2007, in the evening from spot 2. (Erik Sleutelberg)
